Hickory is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Hickory is the county seat of Wilson County. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Hickory were Hugh Lawson and his family who arrived in 1768 from Scotland. They named their new land "Hickory" for an oak tree that stood on their farmstead. By 1800, the community had grown to include 300 people and was known as one of the "Old Settlers' Town". In 1812, Hickory became a separate county when it was split from Johnston County. In 1828, John Sutherlin built a cotton gin and mill at what is now Loop Road and Union Street in downtown Hickory. The mill began producing refined cotton goods such as hats and overalls for white Americans during the 1830s until it went out of business in 1851. However, this did not stop Hickory's growth as a commercial center; by 1840, there were over 10 stores and 50 businesses located in downtown Hickory alone! During the Civil War (1861-1865), much of eastern North Carolina was fought through its borders with Virginia and Kentucky; however, little action took place within Johnson County due to its small size compared to other counties involved in conflictatemporarily or permanently! In 1865 after Confederate General Robert Ewell's ride into Lynchburg failed spectacularly (the Battle of Cedar Grove), many residents turned against him throughout eastern North Carolina following his disastrous military campaign westward into Tennessee! Confederate General Jubal Early then invaded Johnson County on April 12th 1865 while most residents remained loyal to Robert Ewell – resulting in widespread destruction including loss of life among both Union forces occupying eastern North Carolina along with severe economic damage! Despite all this tragedy though, HickORY continued to grow rapidly during Reconstruction thanks to local support systems like blast furnaces created by blacksmiths working under government contracts; these factories produced thousands of articles such as shoes for soldiers returning home after being absent at war! Ixtaposing these various events helps us see how HickORY has emerged as one of America’s most important small towns – its location providing convenient access to surrounding rural areas while also preserving its unique history & culture which can be enjoyed today just like it once was back when founded by Scotsmen & Englishman alike!!!
