Hickory is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 24,052 at the 2010 census. Hickory is the seventh-largest city in North Carolina and the fifteenth-largest city in the United States. It lies on both sides of Duke Street between Chapel Hill and Durham City limits. The area now known as Hickory was first settled by Scots Presbyterians in 1736. Prior to 1834, Hickory was part of Henderson County. On November 3, 1834, it became a part of Durham County when Henderson County merged with other counties to form Durham County. In 1926, Hickory was made an incorporated town within Durham County and has since been governed by its own municipal government. The history of Hickory dates back to early Scots Presbyterians who first established themselves there in 1736 BC. builder James Robertson built a small cabin known as "Robertson's House" on what is now eastbound Duke Street near present day Residence Drive (now University Boulevard). At this location they engaged in farming and lumbering operations until their Removal Act of 1800 forced them out of the state following the war with France. They returned eight years later under a new name: "Henderson". From here they began extensive logging operations which continued until 1865 when transportation improved and logs could be transported more cheaply by railroads across America than by foot or wagon
The first white man to live in North Carolina was James Hickory. Hickory and some of his men explored the state in the early 17th century. Hickory founded a small town, Hickory Station, on the Yadkin River in what is now Randolph County. In 1785, John Marshall came to North Carolina and began charting the eastern border of the state with Virginia. He named part of what is now western Raleigh County after General James Forbes, who had helped him victory over George Washington at Yorktown.
