Hickory is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered to the north by Gastonia and to the east by Elizabeth City. The town center sits on a bluff overlooking I-85. The first white settler in Hickory was John Crouch who arrived in 1772. In 1837, Wm. Henson acquired title to 2,000 acres (980 hectares) of land that now makes up much of Hickory's central business district. This area became known as "The Triangle." In 1843, Colonel William Jepson purchased 3,000 acres (1 km²) of mostly rural land from Andrew Johnston for $100 per acre ($2 million today). Covington Parish included parts of what are now Hickory and Elizabeth City in its boundaries at this time; these areas were eventually annexed into Gastonia County when it was created from Henderson County in 1849. In 1865-1866, General Robert Ewell fought Confederate forces during the Battle of Gettysburg and was wounded near what is now Uptown Hickory on July 12th while leading his Nineteenth Tennessee Infantry Regiment westward across Cemetery Ridge towards Cemetery Hill after repulsing an attack by Confederate infantry units under General Pte James Longstreet
