Hendersonville was founded in 1869 as a trading post by General John Custer and his army during the American Civil War. Hendersonville became an incorporated town on December 7, 1902. The first mayor was Wm. Humes and the first fireman was Jno. Stephenson. The downtown area contains several buildings from the 1800s including a Methodist church built in 1868 and a old jail which still stands today (now used as offices). There are also several modern buildings including Coxe's Drugstore dating back to 1925 and First National Bank building which opened in 1907.

Hendersonville is a city in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 17,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Henderson County. In 1853, it became part of what would become Wilmington and in 1925 it became its own city after annexing neighboring Bentonville. The area that now makes up Hendersonville was first settled by Scots-Irish colonists in the early eighteenth century. Settlement continued until after the American Civil War when most of the Irish left for various reasons including this region being too hostile to them. In 1868, John Waddell founded an agricultural colony called Waddell's Landing on a small island off the coast of Wilmington which he named for himself and his brother James Waddell (1786-1857). By 1870 there were over 100 settlers living on Waddell's Landing with crops such as corn, beans and tobacco production; however, due to high costs associated with shipping goods overland from Ireland and competition from other U.S.-based farmers,Waddell's Landing failed within two years and closed down completely by 1872. The town of Hendersonville was platted in 1873 by Major John Pemberton who had purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) of land east of present day Hendersonville from David Gentry for $1 per acre ($/ha). Pemberton named his new town after General Andrew Johnson because he felt that he had been wronged during the American Civil War by General Robert E.[lizabeth] Johnston who had destroyed many homes in eastern North Carolina without giving any quarter to those residing thereabouts. The original town plat included only one street (present day Main Street), six blocks long with four blocks wide between each block; there were no buildings other than a jail and storehouse which stood onsite until 1886 when a local sawmill was built next door to serve as both their courthouse and town hall. In 1886 following major construction projects inside and outside of the existing limits of town – such as a schoolhouse, Methodist church, post office building and physicians’ office – developers Frederick & Winthrop Lamar added additional streets (now University Avenue) extending northward into what is now southwestern Henderson County along with several additions to existing businesses including Five Points Lumber Company warehouse (), Saloon House () & livery stable (). This growth has resulted in increased traffic congestion around downtown which has caused some issues over the years surrounding noise levels etc., although recent plans are underway to address these concerns through design changes etc.. In 1907 prior to annexation by Wilmington another development occurred when architect Asahel Giannini designed an addition featuring two story brick walls 24 ft (-7 m) thick along Elm Street which Frontenac Electric Cooperative erected near their distribution center just south of today’s intersection of University Avenue NW & ElmStreet NE (). This large scale project represented an important change not only for downtown but also for Hendersonville overall as it marked one step towards becoming a full fledged city rather than simply rural community.. Hendersonville was founded in 1786 by John Henderson, an Englishman who came to North Carolina as a surveyor. The town was named for Henderson's father, also called John. Hendersonville grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its location on the Yadkin River and its access to timber and trade. By 1811, Hendersonville had a population of 1,500 people. In 1814, the town was renamed Bladen County after James K. Polk, then-president of the United States. The name change did little to improve living conditions in Hendersonville; it remained a small community until around 1840 when it began to grow rapidly again due to new vocations and businesses opening up in the area. By 1850, Hendersonville had reached its peak population with 3,000 people living in total. However, by 1860-1861 there were only 1-2 hundred people left in town compared to more than 10 thousand residents today!
