Hendersonville is an unincorporated community in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 233 as of the 2000 census. It lies along US-71 south of Waynesboro. The town was founded in 1868 by John A. Henderson and his brother, James A. Henderson, who opened a general store there and then built a house on the current site of the Hendersonville Post Office. The first shot heard in Hendersonville was fired from a Winchester rifle by John White on July 6, 1868, when he opened his store to sell goods to Confederate soldiers passing through the area during the American Civil War. In 1870, William Pritchard organized a local militia unit called "The Volunteer Rangers" and began training men for Federal service in nearby Greensboro; by 1871 all residents had subscribed to this organization and it became known as "Hendersonville's Militia". In 1865 General Jubal Early captured much of eastern North Carolina at Spotsylvania Court House while attacking Confederate General Robert Ewell's army; early reports indicate that many Union troops were killed or wounded while trying to cross over the Catawba River into Virginia; some blame Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bickford for allowing large numbers of Union troops into northeastern North Carolina without proper protection; within weeks after Early's victory most residents of western North Carolina had emigrated eastward to escape destruction or war; few if any people lived near present day Hendersonville until about 1880 when mining operations started there and more people moved into the area for health reasons due to coal dust inhalation hazards from small mines located around town (the last mine closed in 1984). During World War I ammunition dumps were created north of town between US-71 and Roanoke Road (now Whitewater Drive) where artillery rounds were unloaded for transport across trains going into battle at Petersburg Naval Base southeast of town; these dumps continue operation today although no munitions are ever unloaded there anymore
