In 1835, following the death of President Andrew Johnson, John Randolph became president of the United States and ordered all federal troops withdrawn from South Carolina except for one regiment under his command which remained until April 1865 when it fell back into Confederate hands at Appomattox Court House. When Union forces arrived in time to march against Confederate General Jubal Early at First Manassas Junction on April 12, 1865 they discovered that most of southern North Carolina had already surrendered including Hendersonville which therefore remained spared along with other towns east of Winston-Salem across the state line such as Gastonia and winston-Salem itself.
