The couple had come from Sparta, Tennessee, where they were married on November 14th of that year. They soon set up shop near what is now downtown Hendersonville and began trading goods with settlers along the riverbanks around them. By 1870, they had developed a sizable following among local farmers and ranchers who used their land for grazing and farming purposes as well as for trade with other settlements along the York River Valley south of Knox county lines. In 1871, Colonel James P's son John Fenton erected a log cabin within sight of present day downtown Hendersonville on land donated by Captain Ephraim Ketchum Jr., one of Kentucky's earliest pioneer settlers in this area (Ketchum also donated land for use as a mixaland). This initial structure served as headquarters for local troops during antebellum times when military forces were stationed at nearby Fort Donelson or Camp Butler across the river from today's city limits). In 1872, John Fenton married Anna Gentry which made him father-in-law to both Hendersons; this marriage would later produce six children including future Confederate General Joseph Easley Sr.. Anna Gentry Fenton would serve as mayor of Hendersonvillet from 1906 until her death in 1932; she is buried at rural graveyard just outside town limits on KY 281 next to her husband John Fenton Sr..
