The first Europeans to visit what is now Hendersonville were fur traders who journeyed through the area in the early eighteenth century. The community was named after James Henderson, a member of the British House of Commons and major general in the American Revolutionary War. The first school in Hendersonville was founded by Reverend John Gist in 1798. In 1864, General Joshua Johnson's Corps of cavalry passed through on their way from Raleigh to Chattanooga and stopped at nearby Dunn's Ford for water and food. General Johnson ordered his men to camp there until they could find another place to stay. From this experience, Hendersonville developed into one of the most important centers of commerce in south-central North Carolina during the antebellum period. In 1872, Hendersonville became seat of government for all rural counties within Caldwell County except Bladen County which remained divided between Johnston and Carr counties until 1907 when it became part of Henderson Counties. A post office operated at Hendon since 1836; it moved to its present location in 1865 when that county was created from parts of Johnston and Carr counties. For many years it served as the only post office within Caldwell County other than Bladen County which had its own post office from 1814 until 1898 when that county became part of Cumberland County. In 1903, an act was approved by Congress providing for consolidation of all rural unincorporated areas within Caldwell County with a single Post Office Department under direction of the Board of Commissioners established therein; this Act caused Hennessy v Newton (1894), 141 U S 1 (1903), which overturned an earlier decision by a U S District Court holding that Hennessy did not include Davidson Valley because its boundaries lay outside those prescribed by Congress and were not subject to local regulation by commissioners appointed under that decree but rather were determined by Surveyors General acting on behalf cfthe Treasury Department responsible for mapping out Indian reservations pursuant to law 16 US Cong Globe LEXIS 949). This change removed Davidson Valley fromHennessy's list because it never actually took effect – although some people continued referring to it as "Hendon." It should be noted that although Hennessy did remove Davidson Valley from Listing No: 949 (Hennessy v Newton), this does not mean that we consider our village or communityto be any different than before! We continue chuckled decades later about how everyone thought we had moved away! It seems like everywhere you look today there are reminders...of just how much has changed since then! In 1916–17 Protestant Episcopal missionaries came to Hendersonvilleyand started teaching Sunday School there among other things before moving back home later that year due to prohibition laws governing religious organizations at that time prohibited such activities inside racial ghettos where segregation still prevailed slanderously!. However, new leadership soon came forward seeking permission from both Governor Wofford et al.(See “The Presbyterian Missionary Society” http://www2s3d1a0a7bcfaa5ea8e4ffe24c5f5db)to open churches without prior notice or approval so long as membership met certain qualifications ie no black people living amongst them…..This led directly to wariness& suspicion among many white residents towards these groups starting around 1918-1920….In 1921 Pastor David Couch announced plans To buildA Church On My Farm located near Nowata – This stirred up alot OF commotion And Protests From locals Who Called Him Antislavery preacher type guy w/no right TO do What He Said!, see photo here…..Eventually Pastor Couch Was ConvictedOf Violating Prohibition Laws AND Facing jail Time After Being Pushed Out Of Hisproperty (& Some neighboring homes also lost their roofs!)………………….Many residents felt betrayed By THIS event Which Led To More Dissatisfaction With Local Leadership Current Situation(& ManyProperty Losses)
