Hendersonville is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Hendersonville was James Aiken who built his cabin on what is now called Aiken Street in 1824. By 1830, Aiken had a store and started to sell goods to other settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1832 and named for Hendersonville's founder, James Aiken. In 1842, John Waddell founded a gristmill around which the community developed. Waddell became an accomplished miller and donated land to Hendersonville for development. He also helped found the Presbyterian church which later became known as First Presbyterian Church of Hendersonville. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell visited Hendersonville and ordered all stores within five miles closed because they were supplies for Union forces retreating from Richmond after the Battle of Petersburg. Many residents fled before Ewell arrived, but some returned after he left and resumed business as usual. A new courthouse was built in 1865 by local contractor John Leland and it remains one of the most significant landmarks in Hendersonvillette today. That same year, Hendrickson Academy (later known as Appalachian State University) began operations with just 24 students in grades 9-12th grade; it has since grown into one of America's leading comprehensive universities with over 3200 undergraduate students and over 100 graduate schools/ faculties across eight campuses across 14 countries! During World War II, many locals served their country either directly or indirectly through their businesses or involvement with the military industry; among these individuals are natives such as Enoch Powell (founder/director of Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Roy Wilkins (former headmaster of Philipsburg School), Homer Hickman (founder/director of Hickman Paper Company), Forrest Carrington (manager/owner/director of Local 611 lumberyard) &cetc etc etc etc... Today there are few if any reminders that war ever happened here - instead we enjoy vibrant parks full of beautiful flowers & trees (& plenty Of good things to eat too!) - thanks largely to rich veins OF history running thru our veins!
