In 1861 Confederate General Jubal Early passed through Hendersonville on his way to fight at Gettysburg and stopped for dinner with some friends at Mr. & Mrs. Gentry's restaurant on Main Street before continuing on to battle near Chef Menteur Farm northwest of town. When the Union army moved into eastern North Carolina during the American Civil War, they destroyed most of what remained of the Confederate government at Fort Donelson outside of Nashville while also destroying many other Confederate sites throughout western North Carolina including Hendersonville which lay within Federal lines but not under military control like much else inside Tennessee and Georgia parallel to those along Interstate 25 (which today marks both state boundaries). This effectively ended any hope that Hendersonville could have participated militarily in that conflict - although their downtown square still contains a statue commemorating this fact (it used to be dedicated to Union general Ulysses S Grant though). That same year also saw an addition to Hendersonville-the first schoolhouse west of Raleigh-. This building served as a primary education until 1930 when it became frame barracks for military recruits during World War I.
