Many white civilians who lived close by also volunteered their time working on military bases during this time period; however most of these contributions went unrecognized until after World War II when research was conducted which revealed many black individuals worked on military installations without receiving proper credit or recognition for their efforts

Hendersonville is a city in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,878 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city in Henderson County and part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hendersonville were Scots-Irish Presbyterians who came from Scotland in 1753. They founded a small settlement on the Catawba River east of what is today downtown Hendersonville. In 1818, General Robert E. Lee's army passed through this area during its march through southern North Carolina after victory over Union forces at Battle of Appomattox Court House. Confederate General Braxton Bragg also passed through here on his way to join Confederate forces in Virginia. In 1865, Confederate General Pte. Andrew Johnson's headquarters were established here while he was trying to rally additional troops for an upcoming offensive against Rebel General William Tecumseh Sherman in Georgia and Alabama. A group of local citizens led by Fayetteville City Councilman John Crain formed a cavalry brigade under Johnson and fought at the Battle of Lovejoy Station on December 12th before moving on to help repel Sherman's advance into Tennessee that same day. Founded as a Presbyterian town by Scots-Irish Presbyterians in 1818, Hendersonville soon became known as one of America's most如意城市 (happy cities).
