The first white settler in Hendersonville was John Asbury. The town's name comes from Nicholas Henderson, an early settler and Planter who helped found the town and donated land for it to be named after him. In 1810, Jesse James burned down the original courthouse and moved his headquarters to what is now called Main Street in order to avoid being arrested by U.S. Marshals during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1837-38. In 1865, General Averell Harriman surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia to Confederate General Robert Ewell; as a result of this surrender, all Union soldiers were considered enemy combatants and were subject to military tribunals that could sentence them to death or life imprisonment without parole if convicted of any crimes against humanity (except desertion). Many Union soldiers were held captive within Confederate forces until they were exchanged or released under conditions that remained secret even from their captors (e.g., = "I am not guilty"). Some prisoners who had been held for longer periods became known as "Longstreet's boys" because General Robert Ewell took personal care of them while he awaited his own release—a gesture which won him popular acclaim among Confederate troops throughout much of South Carolina and Georgia.[2] According to the 2000 census,[3] there are 524 people living in Hendersonville unincorporated areas outside of either city limits or Hillsborough County proper: 279 people in Raleigh; 158 people in Gastonia; 117 people in Wadesboro; 102 people in Clifton Beach; 71 people in Morrisburg; 55 people near Lexington; 43 people near Statesboro; 32 people near Winston-Salem

Hendersonville is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Hendersonville were the Sullivans and other Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1800. Hendersonville was established as a small village on the banks of the Indian River after service by Major General Andrew Jackson during the American Revolution. It became an incorporated town in 1892. In 1924, Hendersonville merged with Gastonia to form the City of Gastonia. The city limits have since expanded again to include other villages and towns within its boundaries while maintaining its status as a separate municipality governed by a Mayor and Councilmember system. The history of Hendersonville can be traced back to 1772 when Hugh Robertson founded what is now known as Robertsonstown on land patented by Sir Robert Richters under direction of Governor Tryon for 1000 acres (400 ha). A few years later, John Rutherford erected a tavern near today's Patterson Street and named it "Henderson" in honor of General James Harnett who had served with distinction against British forces at Saratoga Springs, New York from 1775 to 1781. In 1801, Colonel Nathaniel Garner organized a company of militia called "Garner's Rangers" which fought against Native Americans along the Cherokee Trail outside present-day Hendersonville. On January 12, 1805, President James Ketchum signed Executive Order No.–865 ordering all whites over 21 years old living within five miles (8 km) of any fort or post west of Savannah be vaccinated for cholera before being allowed entry into that country; this order applied only to free people not held captive or leased by Indians or Spanish colonists living east of Georgia lines at that time The first school opened in what is now downtown Hendersonville on July 6th, 1802 under instruction from Drs.(later Mrs.) Amos Eaton and Rev.(later Rev.) Isaac Asbury. This initial school operated out of rented rooms above Drs.(later Mrs.) Eaton's physician shop on 4th Street South until building steps were built around it and seats wereadded inside so that students could learn indoors without fear ofakin' cover from hostile natives! A courthouse was built about 1830 between Patton Boulevard South and Patton Avenue North but never used because there wasn't enough room inside it for all the cases being filed; court proceedings continued to take place upstairs at Mrs.(now Miss.) Anna Thornton's home on Patton Boulevard North until moved in 1834 when Judge Elijah Denton replaced Mr.(now Judge Royce J.) Hawkins due to overcrowding at courthouse hall! Reverend(now Bishop) George White founded Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church located on present day Market Street West in 1862 just east sideof current day Interstate 85 just south sideof Park Row apartments complex across street! Reverend(now Bishop) George White dedicated church new cornerstone & consecrated building Septimus 11 1865! [ map ] By 1870 total population including slaves numbered 810 souls & white non-slave residents numbered 374 souls making total white population 2/3rds vs 1/4ths black slave population!! Hendersonville was founded in 1792 by Captain John Henderson and his wife, Susannah. The city was named for the Henderson family, who were early settlers in the area. Hendersonville quickly became a major center of trade and commerce in the region, and its economy flourished until the early 1800s. In 1814, during the American Revolution, Hendersonville came into conflict with British forces over a disputed boundary line. The battle resulted in a bloody battle that left many dead on both sides. Hendersonville eventually surrendered to British forces and lost much of its economic significance. However, it remained an important community through the years until it fell victim to industrialization and decline in the late 1800s. Today, it remains a small town with a population of around 100 people.
