Hendersonville is a small town in the state of North Carolina. The population was 3,651 at the 2010 census. Hendersonville is located in Chatham County. The town is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is included in the Raleigh–Durham Combined Statistical Area. The first settlers to Hendersonville were farmers who arrived around 1810. By 1830, there were more than 100 residents living in Hendersonville. In 1836, General Daniel Boone brought over 10 men from Kentucky to start a farm on what is now Camp Creek Road. The men named their new farm "Henderson" after General Boone's brother-in-law, Henderson County, Kentucky. In 1854, a school was built for students in Hendersonville. That same year, the first post office was established in Hendersonville. In 1870, an electric light company was founded and operated out of a store on Spring Garden Road until it merged with another company in 1872. This company also erected the first hotel in Hendersonville and donated land for that purpose on which the present Courtyard Court Hotel stands today. In 1907, local businessmen formed a joint venture to build a dam across Camp Creek so that water could be diverted for irrigation purposes within their own community and beyond; this project became known as "The Great Diversion." After World War II ended and military units pulled back from most of North Carolina following victory over Japan at Okinawa Sangoku—a operation code name for American occupation—the city began to grow again as people started moving into newly developed areas such as Chapel Hill and Durham thanks to job opportunities created by postwar technology developments like television production plants and other electronics businesses statewide (see: An economic history of North Carolina). These new arrivals brought with them their own cultural influences which helped shape how Hendersonvillette developed over time: its close proximity to major metropolitan areas; its riverfront location; its high percentage of white residents; its strong agricultural roots dating back to preindustrial times; as well as its reputation among Gullah Indians (people descended from enslaved Africans) for having "The Lowest Price" on food items available anywhere throughout the state (based upon surveys taken during this period).
