In 1830 David Hill erected a charcoal kiln (now known as the David Hill Grinding Mill) which became one of the largest producers of coke in America at that time. By 1868, much of central and eastern Davidson County had been annexed by Hendersonville making it an important commercial center forsouthwestern North Carolina during this time period Hendersonville experienced its greatest growth during World War II when many factories were built in the area including Ford Motor Company's Bluefield plant and DuPont's Wilmington plant which are still standing today. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on the newly created Southern Railroad, which made it accessible to new industrial and agricultural production throughout central North Carolina. The growth of Hendersonville led to social unrest in the 1920s and 1930s, culminating in a series of riots that left one person dead and dozens injured. Since then, there have been few large-scale disturbances within the city limits.
