TheLost Cause movement began to take root here after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. In 1924, Hendersonville became one of the first towns in North Carolina to be designated an "official" cultural heritage area by the State Department of Culture and History pursuant to its Cultural Resources Guidelines (5 CFR Part 2). Hendersonville also has a rich history with slavery dating back over 350 years! Many African Americans settled here during this time and many white families also took up residence during this time because they were looking for work or opportunity in what was then a very slave-ridden society. One such family was The Hodgesons who owned land around what is now downtown Hendersonville before moving downriver to Swain County when their plantation failed in 1851 due to bad weather and disease infestations that had decimated much of agriculture statewide at that time. In 1865, Union troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down several homes near what is now Seventh Street downtown following days of skirmishes between Confederate forces loyal to General Johnston vs those loyal to General Ulysses S Grant across three states including Tennessee Valley Authority region which includes Hendersonville . This event made headlines all over the South Newspapers which helped fuel public support for Confederate efforts during Reconstruction leading up to World War I against Great Britain . Aftermaths included large scale looting throughout most southern cities including Nashville where many major businesses were looted including banks & companiesowned by freed slaves including Coca ColaCola operations) resulting in more than $2 million loss for city coffers alone! Aftermaths also left almost 500 African American men dead or missing from different parts southeast TN & Chattanooga areas
