Hendersonville is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,648 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Hendersonville were John Baptist Cunningham and his party on July 12, 1778, and they named it after Henderson County in Scotland where they had been traveling for some time. On December 15, 1779, Captain James Cook sailed by latitude 34°59′N and longitude -83°13′W and took possession of land that he called "Etowah" or most likely "Henderson". He named one of his vessels HMS Endeavour after this county. In 1802 Nathaniel Macon founded what would become Macon University in Hendersonville. In 1868 the state legislature moved the county seat from Salisbury to Hendersonville because of its strategic location as a transportation center on I-95 between Raleigh and Winston-Salem. Founded in 1820 as Hickory Hill Academy by Drury Vining (a Quaker) who did not own any land within present day Henderson County but wanted an academy for boys to prepare them for college education he donated two lots near what is now Church Street to build the school house which opened its doors in October 1830 with 30 students enrolled from eight states and four nations attending during those days including England's Prince Albert who gave $5 toward the cost of building materials plus a free horse ride home each day when he visited Hickory Hill Academy . For many years front lawns along both ChurchStreetand RockyMountain Roads led up to today’s large white building that housed Hickory Hill Academy until recently when much of that property was annexed into neighboring Roger Williams University . Today you can walk out your door onto today’s main street which includes evidence of early settlements including an old log cabin still standing dating back to about 1800 just outside today’s city limits on current Day Green Road When news arrived 2 weeks ago via email from our friends at Appalachian State University “the university has applied for recognition as a non-profit 501(c)(3) institution” we could finally say goodbye to HickoryHillAcademy following more than 160 years! What a sad day but also very exciting news nonetheless ..... HHA will continue regardless as their mission statement says “to promote higher education opportunities among African Americans through scholarship programs and community engagement activities” This means not only will HHA continue providing excellent educational experiences for all students but importantly they will also contribute significant funds towards numerous philanthropic endeavors benefiting black communities across America! We couldn't be prouder or happier knowing how much support our wonderful faculty & staff have received from Appalachian State Univ., local businesses & citizens alike over these past several months!! Thank you everyone for supporting us during this challenging time !!

Hendersonville is a city in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 15,609 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Henderson County. The first post office in Hendersonville was established on December 12, 1837. Hendersonville became a town on July 1, 1872. On November 2, 1907, it became an incorporated village and has since remained that way. The city's rich history can be found throughout its oral and written history books and websites from before it even existed as a municipality to today’s people who call it home. Hendersonville’s story begins with John Crain who settled his family here around 1800 by purchasing 6 acre (2 ha) of land east of what is now downtown from James Robertson for $100 cash and four horses.Crain built his house on present day Third Street which still stands today as one of the earliest buildings in town. John Crain played an important role in early Hendersonsville development by being their first mayor and treasurer when the Town Meeting System was created in 1836-38. He also donated land to build what would become State University which opened its doors in 1851 under then-Governor Beattie Aiken – making him one of the first university trustees in America! It wasn't until after American Civil War that Hendersonville really started to grow with businesses moving into town from all over the state for work during Reconstruction days following that terrible period of our country's history where slavery was abolished but many African Americans were dragged back into poverty & servitude through picket lines & other forms of resistance against white supremacy & Jim Crow laws! In 1865 General Ewell took command of Confederate forces besieging Fort Fisher outside Wilmington and ordered his men to burn down all buildings within sight including those belonging to black residents while they went off to fight! This event known as the Burning of Hendersonville happened just blocks from where current Third Street sits today - leaving quite an impression on both locals & visitors alike! After Union troops liberated Fort Fisher several years later, much building activity resumed including new brick homes being erected along Third Street across from existing stores & businesses… until World War II when so much destruction occurred due to bombing raids by German bombers that many homes were completely destroyed or damaged beyond repair! During World War II most citizens enlisted either in military activities or served aboard Naval ships conducting patrols off North Carolina coast; however some citizens did take up farming as a profession leading to more growth during this time frame within the community especially near US Naval Station Kings Point – homeported here at gunboat dockside adjacent to 3ST Street SW waterfront park since 1941! Later decades have seen less permanent growth although there have been periodic redevelopment projects such as Mayor Bob Dooley’s downtown revitalization project which successfully brought nearly 400 jobs/year directlyto downtown area between 1996-2007; followed by another major renovation project completed last year called “Pathway To Prosperity” which restored many historic storefronts along Third Street NW between Fourth Avenue SE and Fifth Avenue SE – good news for residents (& tourists!) who benefit immensely each month when owner/developer Diane Bigham opens her door for business weekdays 5am-9pm!! Finally we can report very recently that construction is currently underway on yet another major redevelopment project called “Hendersonville Legacy” scheduled for completion Summer 2019 occupying almost 4 acres (1 ha) bordering First Ave NE towards Interstate 85!!! Cannot wait !!

In 1876, the Hendersonville Industrial Development Company was founded to promote industry in the town. Hendersonville experienced a renewed growth in population and business during World War II. Many businesses closed during the war, but Hendersonville regained its prosperity post-war. The town experienced another rapid growth phase in the early 21st century, led by new development around the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. However, recent economic conditions have put Hendersonville into decline.
