It is home to the University of Hendersonville and the Hendersonville-Lenoir County School District. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hendersonville were Scottish traders who passed through in 1795. They named it after General George Washington's headquarters on the Cumberland River in Pennsylvania, which they had seen while travelling down that river. After America gained independence from Great Britain in 1783, developers began to arrive here and start businesses such as cattle drives and cotton plantations. By 1868 there were over 100 residents living hereabouts. One of the first things that people did when they arrived was clearcut forest for agriculture. A man by the name of James Broughton started clearing land for growing corn and wheat about 1868 near present-day downtown Hendersonville. Soon other farmers followed suit and put up tents on their properties for early seed planting seasons; these early settlers would later become known as "the original farmers." In 1875 a post office was established at this location with John Broughton as its first mail carrier; he also served as postmaster until 1886 when an automated system was installed which eliminated most human errors during mail delivery.) In 1880 two men by the names of Jeptha Hapgood and Hiram Wilkinson founded a sawmill in what is now northeast corner of downtown Hendersonville; this mill became one of the largest employers in town during its early years. However, Hendersonville began to rebound following the Civil War when new housing developments became available in the area. In 1875, Hendersonville became an incorporated city. Today, the city has a population of around 25,000 people.
