The name "Hendersonville" originated from General Baptist preacher John Henderson and his wife's family name of Henderson. The first white settler in what is now Hendersonville was James Fenton in 1792. In 1821, Governor Andrew Johnson ordered Colonel John Sumpter to establish a military post at what is now Hendersonville as part of the Johnston Expedition against Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee. When news arrived of Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, General Sumpter abandoned his post and fled to safety in Union territory near Charlotte. A few weeks later on May 7, 1865, General Sumpter returned to find that Union troops had burned his home and all his belongings He again set up a base of operations nearby at present-day University Avenue and First Street before departing for good on July 15th for good finally leaving behind an empty garrison with no permanent home or place to sleep for its soldiers until 1903 when students who were living off campus built their own dormitory called Old South Hall which still stands today
