The area that now includes Hendersonville was settled by white Methodists in 1799 after they discovered a large salt mine in what is now the town. In 1814, General James Akeley formed an army to suppress a slave insurrection in South Carolina and arrived in Virginia with 6200 slaves as part of his forces. After he left for North Carolina, some white men from nearby Lenoir County began to enter into farming and trading with the Indians without getting compensation from their Indian owners. In 1824, Hendersonville became one of thirteen towns in Johnston County when it was created from parts of Randolph and Yadkin Counties. The town's first store opened on November 1, 1825. The first school was built in 1830 and taught by Mrs. John Fenton until 1840 when it became an academy under direction of Reverend Drury Wright Oursoe which continued until 1861 when it moved to High Point Academy where it continues to this day as one of three schools within High Point University’s system (alongside English and Business). On July 12, 1861 – four days after Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House – Union General Ulysses S Grant issued Order No 2 ordering all military stores and equipment to be burned at local camps throughout Johnston County except for those belonging to Confederate forces loyal to Richmond who were allowed to keep their supplies intact including cannons and ammunition while their supply lines were destroyed elsewhere across Johnston County. This order effectively ended the Second Civil War in North Carolina as Federal troops destroyed most all Confederate military infrastructure including munitions storage facilities across Johnston County contrary to popular belief that these stores were used by both sides for partisan purposes during the war effort
