The first European settler in what would become Davidson County was John Sevier, who arrived in 1792 and named his land for his friend General James Robertson, whose father had been a colonel in Colonel Robert McDowell's brigade that fought against George Washington at Yorktown. Hendersonville was founded by Captain Nathaniel Biddle on July 10, 1814 as a small community near what is now known as Pisgah Lake Boulevard and US 421 south of downtown Nashville. Biddle was postmaster of Hendersonville from 1818 to 1830; he also served as justice of the peace and mayor between 1824 and 1830. A courthouse was built on Court Street in 1826, which remained until moved to its current location on State Street in 1907. In 1870, Presbyterian minister Rev. Alexander McNaught purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) east of present-day downtown HendersonVILLE from lumberman Samuel Ladd for $1 per acre (0·33 hectares). He began building what became known as "McNaught's Hill" – an extensive brick church and rectory with five stories and a basement – which still stands today. McNaught donated all but one floor of his home to the Methodist Episcopal Church when it moved into its present facility on Seventh Avenue north of Courthouse Square in 1904; this floor remains today as part of the church's museum collection among other artifacts from Hendersonville’s history. In 1862 Confederate general Jubal Early invaded Tennessee during the American Civil War and passed through Davidson County en route to Lynchburg before retreating through western Virginia without battle or loss. On April 12nderwhile Battle Creek Massacre took place northeast ofpresent-dayHendersonVILLE while Union forces were attacking Confederate forces under Sterling Price at Menard Fordock Road Bridge over Big Branch River; 20 men were killed including 11 soldiers from Company DOne day later Union General Ulysses S Grant marched through Davidson County leading 3 divisions numbering about 2500 men routed Confederate forces under Jubal Early two miles southeast of present-day HENDERSONVILLE after Battle Creek Massacre resulted in civilian casualties including women and children being taken prisoner by Federal troops along with many horses being captured
