The first permanent settler in what would become Henderson County was James Fenton in 1824. He built a cabin on the Muskingum River near present-day Hendersonville. A post office was founded in 1830, and by 1836 there were 10 settlers living in the area. In 1838, John Sutherlin made his first land purchase within present-day Henderson County and set out to plat it into townships. After several years of effort he finalized his plat on July 4, 1840 and named it "Henderson". In 1844 General Johnston's army invaded North Carolina as part of the Campaign against Richmond and sacked Staunton; many residents fled to Henderson for refuge. This campaign also resulted in large numbers of Confederate soldiers being killed or captured in what is now western Henderson County. As a result of this influx of troops and refugees, some farmers began to cultivate cotton plantations outside the then unincorporated town limits while others opened up businesses within town limits—a trend that continued until after World War II when subdivisions became popular because property values plummeted following World War II silo farming operations). The downtown core of today's Hendersonville was developed during the late 19th century as an agricultural center with stores and homes catering to rural customers who supplemented their incomes by working on farms or providing services around town (such as grocery store proprietors).
