In 1851, Henderson became the county seat of Forsyth County and remained so until 1871 when Raleigh took over that role. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee made his headquarters in Henderson while Battle Creek was being fought nearby and this led to increased military activity around the town which caused some homes to be destroyed or damaged during battle damage control operations afterwards. Henderson experienced another period of growth starting in the early 1920s as commercial development began along both the Yadkin River and I-95 corridor growth ensued due to new mills being built along those corridors as well as large-scale agricultural production undertaken by local farmers with help from textile companies such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jardine Hutton & Co., and Wacoal Industries Incorporated (now UTC). This growth continued until World War II when many of these businesses closed down due to regulations put into place following that conflict which included restrictions on transportation access via Interstate 95/Upper Big Branch Road. After World War II ended, much of this commercial development ceased completely as various manufacturing plants closed or were converted into apartments or other uses; however there has been some sporadic return to business since then through hotels/motels operated by developers or through related services offered by physical firms such as plumbing engineers or carpenters etcetera within walking distance of most residents' homes including downtown business districts called "The Triangle". Today Henderson remains primarily a rural community with agriculture still accounting for most economic activity although some retail presence exists within downtown areas now referred to simply as "The Triangle."
