Henderson, North Carolina is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1868 when a group of Scots-Irish settlers from Henderson County immigrated to the area. Henderson is located on the banks of the Neuse River and has been known for its fertile land and its brickmaking industry since before it was incorporated as a town. The first permanent settler in Henderson was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1868. Henderson's first store opened in 1870 and soon became one of the most important businesses in the community. The brickyard that Jensen & Howland built near downtown served as an important source of bricks for many buildings in Henderson until it closed around 1960. In 1870, surveyor John Pritchard identified what would become the present-day city limits of Henderson when he surveyed part of present-day Wilson County. At that time, there were only three other towns within Wilson County: Gastonville (now Winston-Salem), Uniontown (now Hickory), and Fayetteville (now Raleigh). After surveying all of what would become Wilson County, Pritchard designated Henderson as its new county seat. In 1871, local businessmen formed a committee to develop plans for building a courthouse and jail on Bank Street near downtown. The new courthouse was completed by 1872 and served as the centerpiece of town's architecture for many years afterwards. It was also used as an impromptu courtroom during times when larger events couldn't be held at the courthouse due to space concerns or because it wasn't available for use during normal business hours. During World War II, Henderson played an important role in supplying materials needed by both sides during World War II including munitions manufacturing plants along with food storage facilities and military housing units throughout eastern North Carolina*. One such housing unit known as "The Ghetto" exists today adjacent to Interstate 95 eastbound just beyond mile marker 151st Road* - which is where residents from Henderson lived while their homes were constructed nearby.* AfterWorld War II ended, people from surrounding counties began leaving their homes and businesses behind to settle permanently in Henderson* (*See also: "The Demographics Of Johnston County", below). By 1970*, about 60% of all citizens living inside City Limits had roots outside OFC* (*Outwardlooking Citizenry Survey – spring 1990 *) . Today Roughneck Park *just south of downtown* serves as home to over 100% black residents making it one of only two parks wholly black majority*) . Henderson’s rich history can be traced back before becoming a municipality back when Scots Irish settlers started arriving hereabouts back in 1868/69 by choice or forced migration†† *. Mr Caldwell set up shop early hereabouts starting things off big with him being aheadofthe curve setting up his own brickyard right smack dab down on bank premises afore anyone else had even thought about this kinda place! Things really got rolling after he did though with others joining him shortly thereafter till we had ourselves maybe 8 or 9 ‘families’ living together kinda scattered around out there rural country side kinda settling down into whatever dirt houses they could get hold o’!
