Henderson is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,547 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Henderson County. The community is located on the Nashua River in eastern Henderson County. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Henderson were French traders and explorers who explored the area in 1759-1760. In 1785, Englishman John Dunn founded Dunn's Ferry on the Nashua River near present day Hawkinsville. This ferry facilitated trade between Henderson and nearby Charlotte and other parts of North Carolina. In 1819, General James Hance moved his army from Yorktown to encampment at this location before battle against General Robert Ewell’s Confederate forces at Battle of Cowpens. For months prior to this battle, General Hance had been moving his troops through western North Carolina foraging for food and supplies that he could bring with him into battle should he encounter any Confederate forces west of Mount Mitchell. On July 9th, 1819 during battle at Cowpens Mobile homeport on Elizabeth River near present day Durham City, General Hance’s force encountered Confederate forces commanded by Colonel William Tilton along with detachments from both armies under Generals David Hunter and Jubal Early. After a intense firefight which lasted several hours (the longest engagement of the war), Union Major Edward Everett lost his life as a result of friendly fire from Confederate soldiers while defending his wagon train within range of their cannonballs On November 12th 1840 Nathan Boone married Thurlow Weed’s daughter Susannah Ward at Methodist church in east Hendersonville after meeting her during Reverend Weed’s preaching tour through central NC less than two weeks earlier In 1865 local citizens raised money to purchase 1 acre (0 hectare) lot adjacent to current day Civic Center where they built Churches School & Water Tower In 1892 an underground Railroad line was constructed from Waco Junction southward reaching downtown Raleigh by early 1893 when it opened for business called “The Orange Line” It extended until it crossed over Roanoke Road just north of existing Randolph–Henderson Electric Railway tracks just east of New Hope Cemetery

Henderson was founded in 1835 by John Henderson and his wife Elizabeth Key. Henderson was named for General Andrew Henderson, who served as an officer during the American Revolution and later became a Kentucky judge and U.S. Senator from that state. In 1852, General James Longstreet helped make Henderson a county seat with the passage of an act of Congress. Henderson experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century due to its location on the new Pee Dee Railroad line and its access to markets such as Raleigh and Durham. However, by 1900 it had declined somewhat due to increased competition from larger towns such as Cary and Chapel Hill. The decline began again after World War II when demand for housing decreased among military veterans returning home from overseas service. The current incarnation of Henderson began to take form in the early 21st century as a result of two waves of immigration: Hispanics in search of affordable housing; and refugees seeking sanctuary from religious persecution or war-torn areas like Syria and Iraq. Hispanic immigrants have played an important role in defining Henderson's cultural identity since their arrival; many maintain shops or restaurants within town limits while others open businesses outside of it entirely (a practice known as "hijacking"). In addition to its role as one of North Carolina's most diverse communities, Henderson has long been known for its annual Bluegrass Festival which takes place over seven days during April or May concurrent with similar events throughout eastern North Carolina – including Asheville, Fayetteville, Kingsport/Cleveland Heights/Winston-Salem etc.– making it one of the largest regional music festivals in America not just within NC but also across southeastern US regions).

In 1821, Henderson became the county seat of Henderson County, North Carolina. The first courthouse was built in 1824. The town incoroporated as a city in 1907.
