This decision was met with mixed reactions because many people felt that city status would add more taxes to their wallets than it would be worth them to move away from their comfortable life here.

In 1865–1867 the formation of the Carolina Railroad led to increased business activity in town; as a result, more stores and businesses were built along High Street between Trade Street and Church Street. A fire destroyed most of downtown Henderson on July 4, 1865; however, a new library and school were completed within weeks and served the community until 1970 when they were replaced by the present facility
