Henderson is a small town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies near the intersection of I-40 and US 61. The first European to set foot in Henderson was John Hawkins on October 8, 1619. Henderson's first permanent settler was James McMurry who arrived in 1794 from Georgia with his family and started a tannery and grocery store on US 60 immediately east of present day Henderson Elementary School. In 1811, Samuel McGee built McGee's Ford Baptist Church which remains standing today as one of the most important churches in Henderson County. The younger McGee died unmarried in 1827 leaving his father, John McGee Sr., sole proprietor of McGee's Ford Baptist Church for many years until it became part of First Presbyterian Church in 1901 when that church merged with Davidson Presbyterian Church. In 1912, Henderson Male Institute (now known as Appalachian Christian University) opened its doors to students from surrounding counties including Catawba County on Vance Avenue just east of present day McCoy Stadium/Stadium Park where football games are played today (the first NCAA Division I men’s basketball game ever played at this venue). After World War II military installations were established throughout eastern North Carolina such as Fort Bragg/ Alamance Army Base and Camp Lejeune/Northeast Air Force Base (later Camp David), there was an enormous increase in population growth within Henderson County due to these activities while also causing significant development within Clarkdale Village which now surrounds downtown Henderson proper along I-40A just south of McCoy Stadium/Stadium Park. In 1967 the original two miles long railroad line into town from Winston-Salem ran through downtown before terminating at an interchange with US 61 just north of current day McCoy Stadium/Stadium Park; this line has been removed entirely since then making it difficult for drivers access downtown during any given time period although some sections have been reconstructed over time or replaced by new roads following changes within the community itself resulting in some restoration projects taking place over time Hearst Drive / Main Street being rerouted around Old Hickory Lake providing access to several businesses located along that route now called “The Loop” however other business areas located further away from Hearst Drive have not seen much improvement either. Henderson was founded in 1795 by John Henderson, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the North Carolina Provincial Congress. Henderson's original land grant, which included present-day Hendersonville, was 2,500 acres. The town was named for Henderson after his purchase. The first store opened in 1815. In 1838, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,150. In 1886, it became part of Asheville County. In 1912, it merged with Buncombe County to form new Asheville County. In 1920 the county name was changed to Mecklenburg County and in 1924 it reverted to Henderson County again. The community has experienced a number of expansions and adjustments over its history including annexation by Durham in 1907; growth due to textile industry during World War I; post-war boom period as the economy transitioned from agriculture to services; increasing Hispanic population during the 1990s and 2000s; recent gentrification associated with higher housing prices in downtown areas
