Henderson is a town in Onslow County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. Henderson is the county seat of Onslow County. It lies on the Yadkin River, approximately 12 miles east of Raleigh and 11 miles west of Chapel Hill. The first post office in Henderson was established on December 5, 1827, by Jno. Waddell. The first store in Henderson was opened by James Fenton on January 1, 1830. A schoolhouse and public square were built in 1835 by order of the General Assembly; they are still standing although most of their original materials have long been lost or destroyed. In 1855 Henderson had a population of 328 people and an courthouse with a jail for 30 inmates but it burned down that year due to a lightning strike which also destroyed much neighboring property including more than 100 barns and buildings used for agriculture. In 1865 surveyors found that there were no residents living within 10 miles (16 km) of Henderson so the town government moved to Raleigh where it remained until 1912 when it again moved to Henderson effective February 1st following passage of legislation creating Onslow County from portions of Johnston and Wake Counties as well as Currituck County which included parts of Onslow County. The townsite name comes from an early settler named Elijah Hicks who arrived around 1800 from Virginia before moving upriver to what is now known as Hendersonville after his death some years later while exploring an area lying between Raleigh and Gastonia called Hickory Creek Bottom because he observed trees growing thereabouts which he thought might be valuable for lumbering purposes given their strong hold against fireides (a type of fungus). Hicks' descendants still live near Byfield just outside Ofield today where they grow corn, soybeans and wheat according to contemporary records Their ancestor Elijah Hicks can be identified wearing a blue print frock coat with white stripes along the seams dating back to about 1796 when this clothing became popularized among Scots-Irish immigrants during this time period especially those coming through Charlotte/Gastonia waters aboard ships captioned "Fenwick" or "Fenrick". According to one source Elijah's descendant John Hicks married into Nancy Boydston (1792-1864), daughter or granddaughterof Revd Ebenezer Boydston (1763-1829), pastor at Broad Creek Church nearpresent day Hickory Creek Bottom Bridge approximately two miles northward on I-95 exit 249A off exit ramp - thus beginning what would become known as The Boydston Family lineage in Chapel Hill On July 15th 1870 Confederate Colonel William Tatum led 6 regiments under General Bevil Randolph overland from Corinth via Maple Grove Cemetery past present day Hwy 144 heading towards Franklin before turning southwesterly across Toole Lake then continuing eastbound over Dutchman's Ford onto US 74 proceeding into North Carolina This famous march has been chronicled many times throughout history both locally & nationally thru various sources e.g., History Channel documentary " move over negroes! ", books like " another american revolution: civil rights movements in indiana", articles written by historians such as David Sweetman & Robb Atkinson published in NC Historical Review etc... After traveling nearly 300+mi./day/week rounding up supplies at various points along route including large numbers outside Knoxville thus allowing soldiers resteasy evening meal opportunities garrisoned adjacent river crossings resulting finally in lessened need forFORTRAN feedstocks necessary for manufacturing munitions elsewhere !! This event comesearly enough during THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION that many people may have experienced first hand military engagements taking place right here alongside [the Yadkin] River valley providing easy access downstream should battles ever break out !! What we call today Rutherfordburgh /Asheville actually lay just upstream from today's town Limits Rd entrance Staging Ground immediately prior TO Battle Of Wilson creek 3 Mar 1680 !! Radcliffe Heights Cemetery located within limits boundaries exact location cannot be determined however remains significant site nonetheless
Henderson was founded in 1792 by James Henderson and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Caldwell. The town was named for Henderson's uncle, John Henderson, who had died in 1791. The first store in the town was built on the site of present-day Hickory Hill Shopping Center. The first post office was established in 1802. The town experienced a boom during the late 19th century due to its natural resources and trade with surrounding counties. In 1910, Henderson incorporated as a city and began to experience rapid growth. By 1920, the population had reached 50,000 people. However, by 1930, the city's population had dwindled to 10,000 people due to prohibition and other factors. In 1990, Henderson became part of Durham County and experienced another period of rapid growth thanks to new businesses opening up along with increases in job opportunities throughout the county. However, development has led to some environmental concerns that have caused some local residents to call for secession from Durham County altogether.
