When the railroad arrived in Henderson in 1885, it stimulated economic development and more people moved into the town. In 1912, Henderson became one of the original thirteen municipalities within Asheboro County when it was split off from Buncombe County. Today, Henderson is home to a variety of businesses including two banks, three grocery stores, four pharmacies, four bars/pubs/restaurants, two movie theaters and two high schools (Henderson High School & Nash High School). There are also several hundred dwellings scattered throughout downtown Henderson providing housing for many employees of local businesses as well as students attending nearby public schools.

In 1920 they reopened as the Henderson-Gorman Mills company. After World War II they became part of United States Steel Corporation which ceased operations in 1989.
