During this time period also saw some major changes in local government: first, city elections were abolished; second, trustees were elected instead of appointed officials; third, white male citizens were allowed to vote (this change helped integrate Henderson into American society). In 1901–1902 work began on building what is now known as the University Center at Memorial Stadium in downtown Hendersonville. This project resulted in increased business activity around town because students could now attend college without leaving their homes or risking mob violence or economic displacement. The University Center has been an important part of downtown since its completion – both physically and symbolically – making it one of the most influential buildings in townscape today. Henderson was founded on the banks of the Yadkin River by General James Henderson in 1792. The area was first settled by English colonists in the late eighteenth century, and Henderson became a key early commercial center. In 1811, Henderson was burned by a group of Confederate rebels during the American Civil War. The town recovered quickly, and in 1828 it was designated as the seat of government for North Carolina's newly formed Western District. Henderson remained an important local community until after World War II when its population dwindled due to military activity and other factors.
