Henderson is located in the state of North Carolina. The population of Henderson was 9,829 as of the 2010 census. Henderson is a small town located in the Pender County seat of Fayetteville. The town has a total area of just over one square mile and it surrounds the smaller community of Hendersonville to the east and west. The first settlers in Henderson were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. The settlement was platted in 1827, and soon became a small farming community with a population of around sixty individuals. By 1830, however, Henderson had grown sufficiently to include a post office and two stores. In 1851, when Fayetteville was incorporated as a city, Henderson declined to join it and remains an unincorporated community today. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1876 by John C. Henderson and his family after they moved from Cullowhee County, Tennessee to Henderson County to escape persecution from white supremacists. When the post office opened in 1877, Henderson named itself after its founder and first mayor John C. Henderson Jr.. The community's name originated with an early settler who recommended it as a place where people could live "close enough to each other without fear of being too far apart." Henderson became a city in 1974 when it annexed parts of Buncombe County. The addition of these counties raised Henderson's population to over 2,000 residents by 2000. In 2006, the City Council voted 5-2 to annex additional land east of Interstate 484 for development into an eventual population growth area of up to 3,500 residents that would include portions of adjacent counties including Bladen and Moorehead; this annexation would have doubled the current population size for Henderson Township alone). However this annexation was later overturned on appeal due to concerns about potential adverse environmental effects from planned developments within the proposed growth area - which would have added more than 10,000 people onto already congested streets and roads in eastern Asheville alone! In recent years there has been increased discussion around plans for redevelopment or re-establishment of what once were small towns along I-485 (the old NC 12) within walking distance of downtown Asheville; much like what happened in neighboring Durham where similar zoning changes allowed largeenterprises such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Googleplex and Coca Cola Bottling Plant expansion into formerly undeveloped areas near downtowns; all while leaving smaller rural communities behind completely unable to maintain their local economies or even access essential services such as water or sewer service! Although some residents continue to voice concerns about possible negative consequences associated with future redevelopment projects within their tiny hamlets they generally remain hopeful that new ideas will be brought forward that will allow these struggling towns some form of resolution or change rather than simply becoming yet another statistic on US society’s “urban decline” – something we hope will eventually end!
