The Havelock Spotting Scopes Company was founded in 1892 by George Fenton and Elijah Beasley. The company was located in Havelock, North Carolina until 1907 when it moved to Wadesboro, North Carolina. In 1907 the company changed its name to the Havelock Observatory Company. The company continued operations until 1951 when it merged with the Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1951 the company became known as Davidson Scientific Incorporated. Davidson Scientific Incorporated produced spotting scopes from 1951 until 1984 when they were discontinued due to financial problems.

Havelock is a small town located in western North Carolina. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Havelock County. The town was founded in 1853 by John W. Haverhill and named for General George Washington Havelock, a Confederate general who had fought during the American Civil War. Havelock is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina and has a rich history dating back to when it was settled by early European settlers. The first residents of Havelock were Native Americans who occupied the area around present-day Havelock before Europeans arrived in what is now North Carolina in the late eighteenth century. In 1853, John W. Haverhill founded Havelock as an agricultural community with a population of just five people. In 1881, Havelock became part of Henderson County and then Roanoke County until it became part of Western North Carolina when it was created as a separate county on November 3, 1907. The current incarnation of Havelocks began to form shortly after World War II when many families left New York City for rural America following the war. Many local businesses were started due to this migration and many people have continue to live and work near each other throughout their lives even though they may be miles apart geographically speaking. The economy of today’s town is based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing activity taking place; however, much of what makes up the economic base here comes from farmworkers who come into town each day to work on various farms that are located nearby or within driving distance; clothing manufacturers have also set up production here over time but these operations are currently smaller than they used to be because more recent technology has made large factories possible elsewhere while small businesses can still survive thanks to local connections and support systems such as family members or friends who help out during tough times

The Havelock community began as a small farming town on the east side of the Catawba River in 1852. The first post office was established in 1853, and by 1865, Havelock had a population of about 125 people. In 1875, the town voted to incorporate as a city. In 1897, Havelock became one of the original thirteen counties in North Carolina. The county seat was moved from its original location to Raleigh in 1907. In 1915, Havelock became one of three counties (the others being Wake and Forsyth) that were merged into the new Durham County. There have been several changes to the name of the city since it was incorporated as a city: from "Havelock" to "Durham" in 1898; from "Havelock" to "Smyrna" in 1907; and finally back to "Havelock" in 2015. The history of Havelock can be traced back to two important figures: General James Longstreet and Dr. John Locke Goodspeed. General James Longstreet had fought with distinction during both World War I and World War II and is considered one of America's most distinguished military leadersince he commanded Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After his retirement from military service in 1870, he bought land around what is now downtown Havelock and started development which would eventually lead to his community's growth. Dr. John Locke Goodspeed arrived in Duplin County after serving as president of UNC Chapel Hill for thirty years (1889-1915). He came across this area while surveying land for a railroad project that would travel through Duplin County proper – an area that at that time consisted mostlyof swampy areas where few homes could be built because there wasn’t any good farmland nearby accessibleto settlers or builders willing to invest their time and money into such an endeavor Dr Goodspeed found some excellent land near what is now northwest Raleigh within walking distanceof his home monastery on Tryon Street called “Nuns” Abbey – which today still stands unalteredConsequently,Goodspeed decided upon establishing himself as a doctor hereaboutsand named his new village after his birthplace – Helsinki, Finland – becomingone of America’s earliest Settlers & Pioneers.� Ironically enough given all that has transpired over these many decadesI must confess I am not particularly fondof “Havenbrook” but rather prefer my adopted hometown/city located just outsideRaleigh which I affectionately call “Durham” � however like so many things connected withNorth Carolina history I feel confident will eventually revert backto its original moniker � either way thank you for yourinterest.�
