Havelock was a small town in North Carolina during the early 1800s. The town was named after General George Washington, who had fought in the American Revolution and later became president. Havelock was founded by settlers in 1792, and it grew to become a small community with a population of around 100 people. By 1828, the population had decreased to 50 people, and by 1840, Havelock only had 10 residents. However, despite its dwindling population, Havelock continued to serve as aimportant center for trade and commerce within the region. In 1848, Havelock joined neighboring communities along the James River in what is now Henderson County. This event helped give Havelock new impetus and growth as it became an important transportation hub for goods moving between North Carolina and Virginia. Additionally, because of its location on the riverbank, Havelock also served as a place where farmers could send their crops downstream for processing into food that could be sold throughout the region. By 1860, there were only 15 residents left living in Havelocks original buildings; however, due to continued economic development and infrastructure expansion within Henderson County (which began developing rapidly at this time), the town soon regained its former size and importance. In 1810, General James H. Havelock was born in North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and then became a general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. After the war, he served as Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson. In 1865, he was elected governor of North Carolina and held that office until his death in 1870.
