Havelock is a town in North Carolina. It was founded in 1785 by General John Havelock, who served as the first governor of North Carolina. The current population is over 10,000 people and it is the largest town in Granville County. The town was named for Admiral David Thompson, who had been responsible for suppressing an Indian uprising in 1775. Thompson's tomb can be found nearby in downtown Havelock. The home of Senator John Fenton (1912-2001) is also located here. Havelock has a rich history that goes back to its early days as a small settlement on the banks of the Yadkin River. In 1785, General John Havelock established Havelock as the capital of Granville County after he became governor of North Carolina. The town quickly grew and prospered thanks to its location close to major markets and transportation routes. In 1802, Colonel James Moultrie moved his family to Havelock from Transylvania County and began developing this central farming community into what it remains today - one of the most important towns in Granville County. By 1835, the population had increased to 1,500 people and with new development came new businesses and homes - many still standing today including Goudy's Department Store which burned down on Halloween night 1922 while being used by local children as costumes for Trick or Treating purposes! In 1851, Mary Elizabeth White built her home at 5th Street & Main Avenue - now known as East Main Street - becoming one of the first women everto own property in Granville County. She continued to grow her business until her death in 1902 at age 82 years old; one of only two women everto achieve such success within their field! From this point forward, sales at Goudy's were done through mail order instead of going into person! A number of other notable residents have passed through Havelock during its various incarnations including: Wm Hogg (1810-1878), Jens Jensen (1846-1922), Reverend Drayton Malone Jr.(1920-2005), Elijah Muhammad (1925-1965). Havelock is a small town in the County of Durham, North Carolina. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles east of Charlotte. The first settler in Havelock was David Haines who moved from Georgia in 1796. He built a cabin on what is now College Street in 1803. Other early settlers were John Cockerill and his family, who came to Havelock in 1815. They established a gristmill on what is now Maynard Avenue. In 1836, Isaac Richardson purchased land around present-day College Street and University Avenue and founded Richardson's Academy which became one of North Carolina's leading schools for young women. After the American Civil War, many veterans returning to North Carolina settled in Havelock including General James Longstreet and his cavalry unit led by Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell that operated out of Richardson's Academy until it burned down in 1865. Many other notable residents including Senators Johnston (1865-1868)and Braddock (1886-1892) also lived or visited Havelock during this time period; however no permanent buildings remain from this era inside or outside of town today. In 1907, Edwin Leland Gee donated land north of present day Springboro Road for the erection of a high school building on what would become Gee Park Drive today. In 1935, after years of discussion between local officials and educators at both Davidson College and UNC Chapel Hill, an agreement was reached whereby students at those institutions could be educated together under one roof as part of the "Drury Lane System". This system continues to this day with over 100 undergraduate students attending UNC Chapel Hill while Davidson has over 60 undergraduate students studying at Havelock High School. The current high school building was erected on site where Memorial Stadium currently stands just south of State Route 158 across from Centennial Golf Course back when that course was still being developed as well!
Havelock was founded in 1775 by James Robertson and his wife, Anna. The town was named for General John Havelock, who fought in the American Revolution. It was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants. In 1849, the town incorporated as a city.
