However, Butler never reached his destination due to Confederate resistance from inland positions near Roanoke Island; he successfully returned home later that day without losing any men or supplies (the only major military engagement between Union and Confederate forces during the war). After the war ended, many families who had fled slavery returned to North Carolina while others moved eastward into newly created states such as Kentucky and Tennessee. Some residents of Havelock chose not to return until well into the 20th century; however, most still lived there until recently when development interests renewed interest in returning the community to its original prominence as a rural farming community with access to outdoor recreational opportunities
