Havelock, North Carolina is home to the Havelock Armory. The Havelock Armory was established in 1881 by Captain John Denton and his son Captain James Denton. The armory was built on the site of an old mill that had been destroyed by a fire. The armory was first used as a store and then as a weapons storage area. It became known as the "Arsenal of Democracy" because it played an important role in helping to develop the United States into a democracy. In 1916, Captain James Denton passed away and his son, Colonel John Denton took over responsibility for the armory. After Colonel Denton's death, the armory continued to be run by his daughter Mrs. Jane Pemberton until it was sold to Mr. Milton Biddle in 1944. In 1945, Mr. Biddle turned it into a museum called "The Armory of Democracy." The museum has many artifacts from both Captain James Denton and Colonel John Denton's time at the armory including firearms, uniforms, tools, and memorabilia from various political campaigns. Today, The Armory of Democracy is open to visitors from 9am to 5pm every day except Mondays which are closed for safety reasons.
