The name Havelock comes from the Dutch word "Haviland" meaning "farmstead." The original land for Havelock was donated by General James Johnston. Havelock is located on the shores of Lake Norman and has a population of about 2,000 people. It is home to the North Carolina State University and two large hospitals, UNC Health Care System and Chapel Hill Regional Medical Center. There are also several thousand housing units in the town. The history of Havelock can be traced back to 1837 whenNicholas Havelock founded the village on some land that he had donated toNorth Carolina. Many residents of present-dayHavelock were born there during that time including: Dr. George Washington Hawkins (1831-1914), who served as Surgeon General of United States during World War I; Colonel John Witherspoon (1792-1864), who served as general manager of Jonesboro Railroad; Mrs. Sarah Patton Cummings (1811-1892), who ran an early cotton gin; Mrs. Cephus Porter (1794-1853), who operated a white mill; Reverend Jonathan Dayton Jackson (1789-1859) and his family, which included eight children; Reverend Daniel Boone Boydell III (baptized December 5, 1865); and Reverend Jerald Aiken Whitehead (1925-2012). In the early 1800s, guns were still being made with traditional swivels. But as gun technology improved, so too did the design ofgunswivels. By 1825, a new type of gun swivel called a cock-and-lock was invented. This type of revolver used an eccentric thumb crank to rotate the barrel in order to fire it. However, this innovation was not well received by many firearms experts because it required a lot of time and effort to use. Nevertheless, cock-and-lock revolvers became very popular after their invention and remained in use until the 1840s. The popularity of these types of revolvers led to the development of later models that featured pistol grips instead of barrels revolving around a thumb crank. These pistols were more easily operated and could be fired without having to twist the cylinder in order to get the round into battery.
