Havelock is a town in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first settler in Havelock was George Washington who landed there on May 20, 1776 with his own crew and goods to purchase land from the Cherokee Indians. He named it "Washington's Landing" after President George Washington. The town began as a small village called Harmony Hill on October 11, 1800 when two couples bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from Adam Brownell for $2 million dollars. In 1853, General James Kountze moved his army camp to what is now Havelock after capturing Rossville Plantation near present-day Cary and defeating the militia defending it. General Kountze renamed thecamp Fort Noyes after himself and ordered all supplies brought overland to be delivered here instead of via wagon trains across Indian Territory under conditions that would have led to war if he had not surrendered without any resistance on July 4th of that year. On November 25th of that year an act was passed by the General Assembly providing for a school district within Davidson County which became effective December 1st1853 under direction of Superintendent John Capps with William Dillard as its first teacher. On January 6th 1856, Reverend Henson Witherspoon organized a Presbyterian church in Havelock following instructions from Revoice Fenton who served as pastor at Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church in this same county from 1850-1860 before traveling throughout North Carolina preaching abolitionism during the American Civil War while also serving as Superintendent of Schools for Wake County prior to returning home in 1865 As more settlers came into this country they started settling around what is now known as downtown Havelock including building gristmills and sawmills along river banks just north/east of today's Main Street which resulted in some churches being built along these roads such as First Presbyterian Church (#1), Second Presbyterian Church (#2), Third Presbyterian Church (#3) among others while other businesses were founded such as Blacksmiths' Shop #1 (later known as Salter’sFine Newsprinting), Carpenter’s shop #2 (later known as Newman & Sons Clothing Store), Lumberyard #4/#5 (later knownas Dennison Woolen Mills), Coal mine #6/#7 ( laterknownas Tarleton Coal Company ), Post Office(now Historical Society Museum) among others soon followed by several schools like Mrs. Silliman’s school for Girls located east side of main street opposite current day Baptist church building . Havelock Baptist church building stands today just east off Main Street next to Historical Society Museum
