Havelock is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The name "Havelock" comes from John Campbell's 1788 purchase of land along the Yadkin River and its current spelling of "Haviland". The first settler in what is now Havelock was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1789. He built a cabin on property he had purchased two years earlier. In 1800, John Campbell bought the Caldwell farm and moved his family to it. In 1802, he became one of the proprietors of Graham Plantation near present-day Winston-Salem. There he developed a large plantation which included many slaves. Campbell died in 1824 and bequeathed his estate to his nephew, Colonel James Fayette Campbell Jr., who moved it to Havelock and made it into a separate gentleman's academy for white students under the nameCampbell Academy (later renamed Duke University). In 1828, General Alexander Stephens sold 4 miles (6 kilometers) east of Havelock to Samuel Ruffin for $5 per acre for development as a new town called Chapel Hill on Roanoke Creek; this town never materialized because Ruffin did not have the money to build it. A post office was established at Havelock by act of Congress on December 12, 1829; its first director was Mrs. Eleanor Hufford Rossiter Dodge.] On July 16th 1861 Governor Harnett issued an order compelling all men over 25 years old residing within 10 miles (16 km) of Raleigh to leave their homes and come south to take up arms against slavery before abolition could take effect; among those ordered out were several families from Havelocks including Mr., Mrs., children and wife[s]]. Most residents chose not to leave their homes during this time as they knew that if they did so they would become prisoners or worse should emancipation become effective.[Mr.] A few women also decided not to leave their homes due both economic reasons as well as personal protection measures being taken by friends or family members should anything happen while they were away with their husbands or other male family members serving in Confederate forces fighting for independence from America.. The citizens voted overwhelmingly on November 3rd 1861 (81% against leaving) not only because they wanted continuation of slavery but also because there seemed little chance that any form of government could be formed without them consenting,[Despite having received death threats prior] given that most whites living within 10 miles (16 km) were required by law either to join Union troops or face arrest and/or punishment themselves if found unfit for service; outside these 10 mile radius there remained almost no black people remaining loyal enought o secede from Union lines)[Most blacks living within these boundaries voluntarily surrendered when offered safe passage home]. This event is known locally as “The Day Of The Confederacy”[Many black residents chose flight over facing possible enslavement or worse]. Aftermath: Over 240 men died trying---------------Emancipation proclamation finally reads: There exists but one State in America where Slavery shall continue--North Carolina
Havelock was founded in 1792 by Colonel Nathaniel Havelock and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly after it was granted a charter from the North Carolina General Assembly in 1806. In 1811, the Havelocks built a grist mill on the banks of the Dobson River. The mill continued to be used until it was destroyed by fire in 1853. The mill is now a museum.
