Havelock, North Carolina is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was founded by the Reverend John Havelock in 1795. The community changed its name to Havelock in 1868 when it became part of the newly created Cumberland County. The population was 1,514 at the 2000 census. In 1811, William Fenton established a mill on Haver's Creek which soon became an important center for textile production in eastern North Carolina. In 1864, McClellan's Army attacked Confederate forces near Franklin and Havelock resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. This event helped spur development of the local economy as businesses grew to take advantage of increased military activity and opportunities for trade with nearby states. After Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House in 1865, Reconstruction began in North Carolina and Havelock experienced significant growth as new residents arrived looking for opportunity and stability following years of political turmoil and instability. During this time period, Havelock saw dramatic changes as its citizens came to embrace modern technologies such as electricity and automobiles while also becoming leaders within their community through business ventures and social activism. In 1936, Havelock joined other towns throughout eastern North Carolina during one of the most controversial moments of our era when dozens of municipalities across America seceded from then-Unitary States into what would become known as the New South Movement due to racism and discrimination against African Americansibia
