Havelock is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gaston–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Havelock area was first settled by Scotsmen in the early 1800s. They named their community after General George Washington and his army during the American Revolution. In 1855, Dr. James Aiken founded the first hospital in Gaston County and named it for General Havelock who had saved many lives during that battle on July 4th, 1855. Havelock has experienced many changes over the years such as becoming an agricultural center due to increased production from cotton plantations east of town and coal mining operations located west of town which closed around 1960. However, most recently Havelock has become a bedroom community for Raleigh with its growing high-tech industry and new housing developments developed near I-85/27 exit #5 known as "The Triangle". One of the earliest churches in Havelock was built in 1868 by Reverend John Craddock on land donated by Colonel Thomas Smithson Sr., one of local farmers who also helped contribute to initial development of Gaston County. The current church building was dedicated in 1912 and contains a periodical library which is open to the public every day except Mondays when it is closed for renovation purposes; it reopened on November 15th, 2012 after being extensively restored throughout by volunteers from across Carolina!
