Havelock is a small town located in the eastern part of North Carolina, about 25 miles northwest of Chapel Hill. The population was 1,619 at the 2000 census. It is the only community in Dare County and it is also the smallest town in Wake County by total population. Havelock's history begins with Captain John Smith's landing on Roanoke Island on September 12, 1584. He named Havelock after his surveyor and friend, General James Havelock of New York City. A post office was established in 1792 and remained in operation until 1898. The first settler to arrive in what is now Havelock was William Pitts who built a farmstead on Elk Creek in 1824. The name "Havelock" first appears as early as 1827 when Alexander McDowell used it for his farmstead on Elk Creek near today's intersection of US-71 and NC-287. By 1830, John Cundiff had built a cabin at the head of Elk Creek which he called "Havercamp". In 1836, David Gist purchased land from Pitts at what is now known as Gist Park southeast of present day Havelock. Gist organized a Baptist church there which served as meeting place until 1851 when an Methodist church was erected nearby on Plantation Road (now Old Havercamp Road). On December 4, 1855, during a cholera pandemic that swept through North Carolina that year, John Heard baptized nine adults and three children at Gist Park while parents brought their children to hear him preach later that same day from First Presbyterian Church across the creek from Gist Park . At this time Havercamp consisted of just two stores and one blacksmith shop where Tillman Bros., undertaker since 1840; Isaac Sawyer house; Fenton Mill; corn cribs made by slaves - these were some of early cotton mills along Roanoke River . After 1800 much less populated areas were settled throughout Dare County with many people moving away to find new opportunities or joining forces with others forming towns such as Durham or Cary (thenumbering then 350) during this period called "The Gold Rush." However, by 1860 there still seemed to be plenty of opportunity for farmers to improve their lives including building log cabins using pine lumber available near modern day Statesville/High Point area east or west of I-85/I-485 junction Some homes here still stand today including Fenton Mill dating back to 1860 while other homes have been replaced by condos over time such as Tillman Bros.' dam built 1955 Now home property includes 2 churches plus school & playground within walking distance

Havelock is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Havelock was founded by John Wesley and Thomas Broughton in 1792 as an agricultural community on the Yadkin River about northeast of Raleigh. In 1814, it became a stop on the Charlotte and Columbia Railroad. A post office called Havelock was established in 1826, and remained in operation until 1915. The town site was laid out by Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1865 after he acquired it from General Bragg during the Second Battle of Bull Run Creek. The original name for the town (and surrounding countryside) was "New Hope". The first post office building in Havelock was built around 1870 by Wm. Hite and moved to its current location around 1902-1903 when it burned down. In 1886, a millinery shop and other shops were built west of Main Street between Ellison's truck road (now I-95) and Hammond's Hill Road (now US 421). This millinery district would grow into what is now downtown Havelock with many businesses still extant today such as Macy's department store, Jiffy Lube convenience store/laundromat, Bank of America branch, and several restaurants including Joe's Pizza Hut., The Saloon/Brew Pub which served as a popular nightspot until 1988 when it closed due to fire damage caused by Hurricane Floyd; then reopened under new ownership as The Keep before closing again in 2009 due to economic reasons; finally demolished following heavy rains that year combined with city code restrictions preventing redevelopment within 500 feet of water mains or power lines.; Finally located near Jiffy Lube across from Interstate 95 east of Woodward Avenue just north of US 421 along Edgehill Road

It became an important local center for trade and commerce. In 1834, the town was renamed Manchester after the nearby city of Manchester, England.
