Higgins as its owner and manager. A post office called Hiwassee had been established in 1876, but it was discontinued in 1907 because of railroad competition. The first school in Havelock opened in 1865 and continued until 1903 when it became part of Raleigh School District No 10 (later Wake County Schools). In 1915, Havelock Manor subdivision was created to include land east of US 421 that were not within Raleigh School District No 10; however, no school ever operated there until 1976 when it became part of Durham Community Schools system . In 1978 an all-girls high school named Marymount High School opened for students who had previously attend nearby Duke University High School or other girls' schools in Durham then Buncombe County Public Schools; this consolidation caused some controversy since many boys had attended previous girls' schools too . A new high school called Chapel Hill Prep Academyopened for students who did not attend Durham Community Schools or Marymount High School; this merger also caused some controversy since many boys had formerly attended earlier girls' schools . In 2002, Haverlock Elementary School closed after 25 years due to budget cuts made by then-Governor Pat McCrory while he served as mayor of Raleigh; this left only two elementary schools open in the town: Haverlock Jr./Sr., which continues to serve children up through fifth grade (Kindergarten through eighth grade), and Hiwassee Elementary which closed after three decades serving children starting kindergarten through fourth grade .
