Havelock is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,421 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Asheville-Cabarrus micropolitan area. Havelock is located just north of the city of Asheville and east of Interstate 85. The Havelocks are descendants of early settlers in what is now eastern North Carolina. Their first settlement was on Franklin's Creek, about two miles southeast of present-day Havelock. In 1796, James Robertson and his family founded what would become Robertson County; they named it for General James Robertson, an American Revolutionary War general who had fought in British America and been rewarded with a land grant in eastern North Carolina. The town was platted in 1812 by Colonel George Washington Randolph as one of four towns within Johnston County established to serve as stores for the county court system. At that time only white people could live there; black residents started moving into the town beginning in the late 19th century. By 1860, when all African Americans were prohibited from living within 1/2 mile (1 km) of any public school or courthouse, most black residents had moved out of Havelock and scattered throughout Johnston County and other sections westward into Tennessee and Alabama. The post office at First Baptist Church opened on May 5, 1865; it served until 1978. Havelock is a small town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. It was founded by General David Butler in 1810 as a station on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The population was 10 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Havelock was first settled by Native Americans and the first white person to live there was Captain John Gregg who built a cabin on what is now known as Gregg's Island in 1784. In 1830, Colonel James Robertson bought land in what is now Havelock from Captain Gregg for $1,500. He named it after his friend and ally George Washington. In 1836, Governor Andrew Johnson ordered the erection of a new courthouse in Raleigh and commissioners were selected to design and build it. The cornerstone for the new courthouse was laid on October 14th, 1836 by General Butler himself. The building initially housed just military court martial proceedings but soon became home to state courts as well which continued until 1896 when it merged with Raleigh’s Superior Court building to form the current Raleigh Courthouse Annexation Plan No. 1 (RCP-1). In 1907, part of the original Tryon Palace—now called Georgian Row—was added to HavelOCK while other parts such as Enloe Hall (1824), Goode House (1829), Pritchett’s Store (c 1840) and Johnston’s Wharf (c 1850) remain today within walking distance of their original locations In 1865, Confederate Gen Robert Ewell decided against retreating southward towards Charlotte instead choosing instead to march through Durham on their way back down South On July 12th 1865 two cannons were used during Jubilee Parade from Second Ward Grounds northeast corner of High Street between Fayetteville Avenue and Meetinghouse Road eastward along High Street thence northeast corner of Meetinghouse Road westward along Fayetteville Avenue until they reached Union Depot nearGWU Campus northwest corner of New Market Place southeast corner of High Street between Chowan Avenue NW and Union Boulevard SW
