Gun barrels are one of the most important pieces of equipment an individual can own. Gun barrels have been used for centuries to shoot arrows, fire cannons, and other weapons. Some of the earliest gun barrels were made from wood and did not have any metal fittings. The use of metal fittings began in the 16th century when cannons were invented. Flintlocks were created during the late 17th century and early 18th century by colonists in North Carolina. Flintlocks worked by striking a piece of flint on top of the barrel, causing it to spark and launch projectiles off the projectile hole in the barrel (see Figure 1). This type of weapon was very inaccurate because it required a long time for the sparks to fly all the way into the projectile hole and hit the target(s). The inside of a gun barrel is filled with a propellant such as powder and shot. When the trigger is pulled, the propellant in the gun barrel ignites and causes an overpressure to build up in the barrel. This pressure forces the projectile down the bore and into the chamber where it can be fired

By the late 1800s, different types of munitions had become common and so new barrels were needed to shoot them. Around 1900, a company started making barrel extrusions for cannons in Havelock. This company became known as Baker & Taylor Barrel Company. In 1915, Havelock began exporting barrel products to countries around the world. At this time, it was considered one of the leading barrel companies in the world.

Havelock is a town in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,634 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Havelock School District serves Havelock and its surrounding townships and villages. Havelock was founded in 1853 by Colonel John Crain and his wife Elizabeth Lee Crain. The first post office was established in 1854. In 1881, a Baptist church (the first Episcopal church in the area) was built in Havelock and served as the town's religious center until it burned down in 1927. In 1925, a small dam across Beaverdam Creek became known as Lake Norman after Governor Frank Graham signed legislation creating it. The lake fills up every year with silt from the creek bed which must be dredged out and replaced periodically; however, because of this flooding, Havelock has an unofficial nickname "The Dam City." As of 2006 there are still some structures on Beaverdam Creek that are not considered dam structures but which still serve as local landmarks due to their engineering features such as culverts that allow water to enter and exit the creek over two main bridges without overflowing/flooding into neighboring properties or communities downstream (such as Cary).

Havelock is a town in Caldwell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Havelock community was founded in 1857 by John and Nancie (Nannie) Havelock as a farming village on the edge of present-day Raleigh. In 1880, the Havelocks built their first school house and started to build a Methodist church and other homes in what is now the center of town. In 1886, they became owners of the land that makes up much of today's Havelock village; they donated it to the city for development into an integrated urban area with schools, businesses and services. In 1915, J.D. Payne purchased 320 acres east of town from W C Pickens for $10 per acre ($ in 2018). Payne began developing this land into what is now known as Payne Park which includes several golf courses including Pines Course which opened in 1922 and remains one of North Carolina's most popular golf courses today . The park also features a riverboat Landing boat landing dock/repair shop/diner complex operated by NC Parks & Recreation and available for public use during summer months as well as a number of interpretive trails leading to local natural resources such as quarries and streams located within minutes' walking distance from many homes in downtown Havelock
