In Havelock, North Carolina, the first firearms were used in a battle on October 9th of 1814 between United States Marines and British forces. The battle was fought at what is now known as Marine Barracks on the Square.
Havelock is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Hiwassee River. As of the 2010 census, Havelock had a population of 8,898. The name "Havelock" derives from Dutch and English settlers who named it for General John Havelock (1763-1827), an American Revolutionary War general and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The town was founded in 1820 by Scots-Irish immigrants following their departure from Ireland after independence there from British rule. They named their new settlement for General John Havelock because he had successfully fought against British forces at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 and had become well known in America as a hero. The first store opened in 1821 and by 1830, Havelock boasted three churches, two taverns, six schools, and twelve shops. In 1860, when North Carolina became a state, Havelock's population numbered 902 residents; however its growth was slow due to lack of transportation connections and agricultural production being limited to subsistence farming. In 1865, during Reconstruction after the Civil War ended, Havercloke citizens voted to secede from South Carolina as part of that state's efforts to rejoin the Union as one country under one government. On July 10th of that year they submitted an ordinance requesting such secession be granted automatic recognition by North Carolina authorities; this request was granted on November 5th with no public protest or opposition other than what may have been expressed privately among some local officials concerned about how such secession might impact their own political power within the newly formed Confederate States Of America (CSA). Shortly thereafter many businesses including several stores closed down due to low demand from Confederate soldiers stationed around town while others reopened but with smaller populations owing to increased taxes paid by allResidentsOfSouthCarolina as part of Southern Reconstruction efforts preceding Republican control over North Carolina following Reconstruction itself which lasted until 1971 when Democrat Parris Glendening won office becoming first African American Governor OfNorthCarolina

Havelock is a town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of Durham County. The Havelock Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966. The town was founded in 1838 by Colonel John Pemberton and his family as a place to raise crops and view the surrounding mountains. In 1840, Pemberton built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Havelock after his Scottish home of Haverigg House. By 1844, Havelock had a school and two stores. A post office was established in 1845, and by 1865, there were twelve businesses in Havelock with a population of over 100. In the early 20th century, Havelock became an agricultural center due to its fertile land and good water resources. The industry which helped drive this growth included agriculture (cotton ginning/smelting), lumber (manufacturing masonry products), information technology (telegraph line construction), foodprocessing (poultry farming/butter production/dairy farming), and manufacturing (steel fabrication). In 1922, automobile production began in nearby Durham; this led to increased development around the town square with several new blocks being built for housing, businesses, schools, churches and other civic buildings during that period. During World War II many residents worked for General Motors or Ford Motors at their plants located in Durham or other nearby cities; these jobs produced much economic activity throughout the area during wartime as well as afterwards when war-time demand slackened After World War II ended there was significant growth however some aspects of this such as highway building slowed down while others like environmentalism boomed thanks to examples like solar energy development which started here then spread nationally
Havelock was founded in 1811 by Captain John A. Havelock as a Loyalist settlement on the Yadkin River near present-day Charlotte, North Carolina. The town would grow over the next several decades and become a major center for cotton production in northeastern North Carolina. In 1838, Havelock became the capital of North Carolina following the state's purchase from Spain of the Spanish colony of Puerto Rico. The city would continue to grow during its early years, becoming one of the most important settlements in northeast North Carolina. By 1860, Havelock had reached its peak as a commercial and cultural center in northeast North Carolina. However, during the American Civil War, Havelock was unsuccessfully attacked by Confederate forces and lost much of its significance within months of war's end. After the war, Havelock declined into decline until it reopened in 1978 as an educational resort and commercial center.
