The Havelock community was founded in 1851 by Nathaniel Haverhill and his wife Hannah Clarke. In 1853, Nathanial Haverhill's brother-in-law James Goode donated land to Havelock for a public school. In 1865, when Durham County was created from Wake County, Havelock became its seat. The first post office in Havelock opened in 1870. Havelock has been through many changes over the years; its most recent incarnation as a small town dates back to the early 1900s when it included only a few homes and civic leaders were scarce. However, over time new businesses have cropped up and businesses such as convenience stores and banks have become more common in an area that has seen more than one tornado during its history (the most recent being during Hurricane Matthew in September 2016). It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Havelock, North Carolina history. On July 12th, 2017, David C. Williams passed away after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He was an amazing man who has left behind a profound impact on the lives of those he met along the way. David was born in Havelock in 1951 and spent his early years working on family farms in central NC. After high school he attended Duke University where he studied political science and played baseball on the varsity team for three seasons before going on to earn a degree in law. After getting his JD from UNC Chapel Hill, he began practicing law full time in Raleigh. In 1998, he was elected as Mayor of Havelock and served until 2006 when he decided to run for reelection as Mayor pro tempore. During his term as Mayor, David worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for residents and businesses alike by creating new laws and ordinances which helped create more jobs and lowered crime rates. He is truly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him during his time as mayor!
