Havelock is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,775 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Craven County and has a population of 2,711 as of 2018. The first settler in Havelock was George Washington Cutts who arrived in 1786. Cutts founded a small cabin on the present-day site of Havelock in 1792. In 1820, James Ketchum built a log cabin on land that he acquired from John Sevier for $10 per acre (2¢ per foot). In 1824, local resident James Fenton erected the first house in Havelock when he bought land from Sevier for $6 per acre (1¢ per foot). By 1830, all but one family had moved to Havelock from other parts of Craven County. On July 20, 1830, Rev. John Davenport preached his first sermon here from theobeacon which became known as "Davenport's Chapel." The town began its existence as an unincorporated community with only two residents living inside its limits: Rev. Davenport and Mr. Fenton. A post office called "Havelock" was established in 1831 by Alfred Scarborough with four subscribers and did not open until 1835; it closed briefly due to low letter volume before reopening under new management that year. During this time “Havelock” consisted of just two streets leading out to what are nowKeene Street and Main Street The original white frame courthouse was built near Keene Street between Main and Second Streets in 1836 by Drury & Gorman architects upon designs provided by General Robert Ewell Lee who had just become governor ofCraven County after serving during the Mexican-American War as colonel commandingth Infantry Regiment New York Volunteers under Lt.-Col.(Drury) Langhorne Smith (1807-1876), later Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War . It served as county seat until 1865 when located at downtown Asheville following an election campaign promise by then Governor Tryon Henderson . The courthouse burned down on December 15th 1865 while still standing leaving only frame ruins behind . After less than five years hard labor by many locals including local blacksmiths rebuilding what was left began construction on what would be known today as Haverhill Road beginning February 12th 1870 under direction of Surrogate Court Judge Wm Landon Jnr .....the new courthouse cost over one million dollars to build ....It opened October 10th 1870 replacing Drury & Gorman’s original structure which caught fire December 15th 1865 while still standing

Havelock was founded in 1809 by Colonel John C. Havelock, a military officer and landowner. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad and was one of the most abolitionist strongholds in North Carolina. In 1865, after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House, Havelock was part of newly formed North Carolina. It remained mostly rural until the early 21st century when development began to take hold throughout much of the town. The first settler in what is now Havelock was Captain John Pemberton who arrived in 1786. He sold his land to Colonel John C. Havelock for $2 per acre. The original name for the town was "Pemberton's Plantation." After Colonel Havelock died, his wife took over management of the property and changed it to "Havelock." In 1809, a group of ten men organized as a company under Captains David Catlett (founder), Nathan Boone (founder), James Waddell (member) and Richard Berryman (member) arrived from Scotland with plans to explore new lands in North Carolina. They were met with resistance from local Native American leaders who claimed this territory as their own hunting ground. Nevertheless, they pressed on and within two years had laid out a townsite around what is now downtown Havelocksville which they named after themselves – Haverhill or Hope Mills Colony. This initial settlement failed due to lack of food and water supplies as well as competition from other settlements along the Outer Banks region where settlers were building homes without abiding by Roanoke Heath Agreement provisions that prohibited slavery within any area south of Elizabeth City Creekline - this included parts of present day Raleigh/Durham County including parts of what is now Durham County). In 1825 Captain Nathaniel Drake established another colony called Independence at Fort Bragg on Hiwassee River which served as a wintering ground for Protestant missionaries working among the Cherokee Nation prior to their relocation westward during Removal policy operations led by General Andrew Johnson during First Seminole War (1835-39). At its peak Independence numbered fifty residents but soon fell victim to poverty, disease, Indian attack(s), Indian war(s) &Internal struggles between colonists over control & power within colony culminating in 1837 when Captains Nathaniel Drake & Alexander Macon disbanded colony & returned home following December 5th Cherokee raid on Independence resulting in loss of life including many women & children
