In 1762, British general Cornwallis united with South Carolina in forming a new nation called America and renamed it North Carolina; Greenville became part of Nash County within this new entity. In 1829, entrepreneur John Maney developed plans for an irrigation system that would irrigate much of central North Carolina from his land grant near present day downtown Greensboro through Canova Creek on behalf of farmers across western Virginia and eastern Kentucky into which he had purchased land from Native Americans living along the creek’s course. On July 4, 1830 – two years before James Ketchum founded nearby Asheville – Maney’s system became operational when water pumped by horse power achieved cereal yields up to 12 bushels per acre far above average yields reported by farmers east of Raleigh/Durham area at that time! Maney died suddenly just days before his dream project became reality when parts failed during construction; however local citizens raised enough money to finish entire project without him – becoming one of only two cities in America without a merchant class until Cleveland opened its Public Market adjacent to today’s courthouse in 1851! On May 2, 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Greensboro on horseback seeking revenge for Averill Harriman's destruction of his army's supplies at Missionary Ridge six months earlier; however upon arrival Ewell learned about Union Army General William Tecumseh Sherman's march towards Atlanta that morning and instead turned westward towards Raleigh where he discovered early evening news reports indicating Sherman had crossed over Black Mountain into Durham County! Acting on advice from Confederate General Alexander McClellan who knew about Sherman's movements, Ewell ordered most all troops northward towards Johnstontown Cemetery outside Grahamstown before withdrawing completely the next night approximately 65 miles southeast toward Durham! A total loss for Confederates - more than 1 million human casualties including 5500 officers killed or wounded - plus billions dollars worthaken military equipment lost along route
