The first European to set foot in what is now Greenville was Captain John Smith on October 24, 1770. He named it after General James Morrell's Corps of Artillery that had just passed through town during their campaign against the Cherokee Indians. Downing located a coal mine here and submitted the claim to the United States Patent Office naming it for himself and fellow coal mine owner James Mclntyre Johnston (Johnston Coal). The early days of Greenville were extremely difficult due to its location on high ground between two hostile Indian tribes -the Cherokees and Catawba Indians- who constantly harassed settlers and mined resources from this area without any compensation or protection from either tribe. However, with hard work and determination by both men and women, Greenville slowly began to develop into one of America's most prosperous cities during the late 1800s – thanks in large part to homegrown entrepreneurs such as Dora McClendon (1816-1920), Jno. Wasko (1850-1935), Judge Jno.[?] Pritchett (1886-1964), Mrs.(?) Blythe Gentry (1894-1978) – all natives of nearby Roanoke Rapids adjacent to Gaston County, North Carolina; Sallie Mae Jackson (1902-) played an important role in developing downtown Greenville into what it is today; Major Roy Fenton established Fort Knox State Park here in 1922 which became one of America's earliest national parklands; as well as lumber Baron Humbert Harriman’s purchase in 1927 Ofc[?] Harry Hines who served as Mayor from 1951 until his death in 1978 In recent years much has been done within our city limits specifically targeted at improving education opportunities for young people including Head Start centers, new parks/parks expansions/renovations throughout downtown which have impacted directly many families & businesses within our community & more recently we've seen significant investment being put into redeveloping nearly all 3 main intersections(Downtown Core / Gorham Ave., Bigelow Blvd./Pine Street South / Franklin Street West) creating a triangle form village square with a central business district
