Greenville, North Carolina is a city in and the county seat of Wake County, North Carolina. The population was 1,693 at the 2000 census. Greenville is located on the south side of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area and is bordered to the east by Cary and to the west by Tyrrell. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification: Cfa), with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The first settlement in what is now Greensboro occurred in 1792 when Captain John Smith's group traveled down the Yadkin River through what is now Hillsborough County. In 1801, General James Fayette decided to relocate his army from Alexandria, Virginia due to its hostile presence towards white settlers. He ordered General Nicholas Johnston to march his troops through Greensboro into Durham COUNTY so that he could be received with honors there instead of at Durham Station where he would have been exposed as an Indian fighter. The town was platted on December 12th, 1802 by George Washington Smith who named it for himself – George Washington Academy (now part of UNC). The town grew rapidly from its early days until after Reconstruction when cotton prices collapsed and manufacturing shifted away from Greenville toward larger cities such as Charlotte and Raleigh. After World War II agriculture became more important in Greenville; however heavy industry also developed over time including breweries, tire factories and chemical plants which produced pollutants which affected nearby residents’ health even into this century. The history of Greenville begins with three British settlers who arrived on horseback near present day Greensboro in 1750s looking for land to purchase from Native Americans named Cherokee Indians who had been stealing their horses since 1699 BC according to some historians[1]. The Englishmen were John Lawson, James Caldwell, and George Washington who traveled through what is now Durham County on July 4th 1751 when they discovered portions of what would become today’s Durham Township/County[2]. They named their new settlement “Halifax” after King George II’s capital at Halifax Court House in London where he was receiving news from his ministers during his trip back from New York City[3]. At first the settlers were farmers but they soon became involved in trade with Native American leaders such as Catawba Chief Colquitt[4] whose raids into English settlements led them to arm themselves against him beginning in 1753[5]. In order to finance their military efforts against Colquitt several members of Lawson’s party went into debtors prison before being released later that year[6], which set off a series of events resulting in more English settlers coming westward including William Tryon who settled near present day Wilmington NC along with his brother John Tryon Sr.. He organized a group called “The Sons Of Liberty” which fought against British rule until he was hanged at Yorktown Battlefield near Charlotte NC on October 14th1781.[7] Later groups such as Benjamin Hawkins started trading with Native Americans again leading to increased raids into English settlements starting about 1770 AD by various bands including those led by Apalachicola Chief Tallahassee which resulted in several colonists being killed or captured including Robert Easley who died at Fort Pitt Landing on November 3rd1770 AD according to some sources[8][9][10][11][12] Others such as Francis Marion chased away these raiders culminating with him capturing Apalachicola Bayonet Factory late 1700 AD while attacking Spanish forces off Cape Fear River[13],[14] [15],[16],[17]). In 1775 Captain James Cook sailed past Beaufort Island while traveling between England and Asia sighting vessels carrying goods bound for North America; this inspired Christopher Columbus himself when he decided upon reaching North America sometime after 1600AD – thus beginning American explorationism.[18]) After discovering Indian Country Captain Phillips landed at Roanoke Island early 1800AD finding Friendly Indians living among them so he began negotiations leading eventuallyto land grants totaling 343 square miles plus assorted resources adjoining US soil providing easier access for white man seeking passage Westward via sea rather than going through hostileNative American nations like Cherokees(mentioned earlier)[19]). During peace time various churches were built here including one dedicated To Our Lady Of Peace erected in 1824 following General Andrew Jackson's victory over Rebel forces during the Battle Of New Orleans; under Franklin D Roosevelt it served as headquarters for Fairchild Air Force Base during World War II; it burned down circa 1945)[20][21] but was rebuilt following Hurricane Katrina damage making it one unusual building still standing today despite many losses both inside and outside its walls! Greenville was founded in 1755 by James Robertson and named for the English green tree near where he lived. The town began to grow rapidly after a grant from King George II in 1768 allowed for the erection of a courthouse, school, and other public buildings. The town's growth continued with the addition of land grants from the British crown and state legislatures until 1824. In that year, Greenville became an official city. By 1860, the population had reached 2,500 residents. Growth could not keep up with demand for housing and jobs during the Civil War, which destroyed much of Greenville's infrastructure. The city lost over half its population to Confederate forces within three years of its founding. After Reconstruction efforts failed to reverse social injustice caused by Reconstruction-era racism, Greenville reverted back to a small farming settlement until it regained its status as an incorporated city in 1907.
